Compared to number of programmes offering electrical and mechanical engineering master’s degrees, there are relatively few US universities offering post grad nuclear engineering options. But, those that do are the cream of the crop.

And, as more nuclear engineers reach the age of retirement, there will soon greater opportunity to get new feet through the door.

How much do nuclear engineers earn in the US?

Salaries for nuclear engineers in the United States are among the highest of any engineering field. In 2018, the BLS pegged the median annual wage at $107,600 for engineers across all levels of education. The mean salary for the same year was $110,790.

Top paying industries employing nuclear engineers are: 

  • Management, Scientific, and Technical Consulting Services: $149,150
  • Architectural, Engineering, and Related Services: $132,080
  • Remediation and Other Waste Management Services: $125,650
  • Scientific Research and Development Services: $123,690
  • Management of Companies and Enterprises: $108,120

Where do nuclear engineers work in the US?

The top employment states for nuclear engineers are:

  • Virginia
  • South Carolina
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Mexico
  • Connecticut

Meanwhile, the highest paying states and annual mean wages are: 

  • Maryland: $137,930
  • New Mexico: $136,310
  • California: $132,180
  • Idaho: $128,270
  • Tennessee: $126,300

It’s a pretty wide spread, with a lot of focus on the southern states which may help narrow programme selection, though it’s worth remembering that top recruiters will definitely consider students across top schools.
