Engineering: Nuclear Engineering Focus

Katie Schenk - November 30, 2017

Nuclear engineering

Compared to number of programmes offering electrical and mechanical engineering master’s degrees, there are relatively few US universities offering post grad nuclear engineering options. But, those that do are the cream of the crop.

The same can be said for the salaries and employment outlooks for the field. Although the job growth forecast from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is slim at four percent between 2016 and 2026, new focus areas are likely to emerge in the field of nuclear medicine. And, as more nuclear engineers reach the age of retirement, there will soon greater opportunity to get new feet through the door.

Better still are the mean and median wages for nuclear engineers in the United States. In 2016, the BLS pegged the median annual wage at $102,220 for engineers across all levels of education. The mean salary for the same year was $105,950.

The top employment states for nuclear engineers are Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Meanwhile, the highest paying states are New Mexico, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and California. It’s a pretty wide spread, with a lot of focus on the southern states which may help narrow programme selection, though it’s worth remembering that top recruiters will definitely consider students across top schools.

As many nuclear engineers work for power generation companies, national governments, and across research fields, this is definitely one engineering masters that’s in demand across the globe. The key is to starting your job search along with your master’s programme search. Why not start now?
