About the school

The University of York’s Department of Economics and Related Studies began operation in 1963. The department aims to make its students thoroughly adept in the economy and its advancements, thereby significantly impacting society.

Being one of the biggest educational departments in the UK focused on economics and related studies, the College trains its students to make considerable and progressive changes in the global economy’s critical facets. The fields include health economics, applied microeconomics, econometrics, macroeconomics and finance, economic theory, economic history, and political economy. The courses are diverse, from pure economics to combined courses that include finance, mathematics, history, philosophy, and politics.

The Times Higher Education ranking of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 places the Department in the top 10 for impact and joint 14 for research in the UK. Notable alumni include Anibal Cavaco Silva (former Portugal president), Han Seung-Soo (former South Korean prime minister, and Professor Daron Acemoglu (Erwin Plein Nemmers prize recipient).

York is one of the most beautiful cities in England, with a rich culture, history, and beautiful landscapes. It is rated as one of the best places to live in the UK. Students will never have enough time during the weekends to explore this historical city's magical places.

Location of the school

The University of York offers on-campus accommodation options at Wentworth to graduate students. Those requiring this facility must apply as the houses fill up quickly. The university currently provides studio flats and self-catered single rooms for graduate students. Off-campus accommodations are also available at nearby locations. The rates vary on the facilities, location, and type of accommodation chosen. Students should refer to the University's portal for help regarding moving in formalities and things they should and shouldn't bring.

Students should get their University Card when they visit the campus for studies, regardless of whether they choose off-campus or on-campus accommodations. This serves as their ID card and provides them access to many facilities. They must also download the University of York (UoY) mobile app to know the timings and locations of various student resources. There are over 10 restaurants and cafes on the University campus, and students can visit the official website to learn more about the menu and opening hours.

The University of York has over 200 student clubs, 65 sports and fitness clubs and other arts and entertainment activities to keep students engaged and entertained during their stay here. Participating in these clubs will help the Department of Economics and Related Studies students build a strong network with peers of other disciplines, thereby improving their overall personality.

The Economics Society is one of the most exciting clubs in which students of the Department of Economics and Related Studies can participate. This society caters to the academic and career requirements of the students through a series of engaging events throughout the year. These events include Speaker Events (renowned academicians from the University of York and other places speak to students about their research), Career Events, Fortnightly Socials (where students can indulge in fun nights involving movies and quizzing), Equilibrium Magazine (where articles from the students of the Department of Economics and Related Studies get published) and the Economics Family Scheme (a recent initiative where seniors in the Economics discipline mentor freshers).
