The School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) at the University of Texas Health Science at Houston Center has a history dating back to its establishment in 1967. The McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, previously known as UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI), is one of 14 institutions in The University of Texas System. Besides being the only academic biomedical informatics programme in Texas, it is also a standalone school among 70 similar programmes nationwide and ranks among the largest of its kind globally. The school's mission is to convert data into practical knowledge, educate future leaders, and advance biomedical discoveries and healthcare enhancements through research and innovative technology solutions. Many SBMI graduates have made notable contributions to biomedical informatics. They include John D'Amore (founder of Diameter Health), Preston Aycox (manager, clinical/pharmacy informatics at Park Plaza Hospital), and Deevakar Rogith (mentor and advanced researcher in biomedical informatics).
