Engineering classes began at the University of Alabama (UAB) in 1837 with a 2-year course in civil engineering. In 1937, the College received accreditation for 6 out of 8 courses from the Engineers' Council for Professional Development.

The engineering school now has 5 academic departments with over 15 graduate degree courses and tracks to choose from. The courses are highly adaptable and range from conventional M.S./Ph.D. degrees to online Master of engineering degrees.
