US student visa: Requirements, timeline and how to prepare

)
Who needs a US student visa, what the F-1 requires, how the timeline works, and where to go next for each step of the process.
Most of what is written about the US student visa is written as one long article, which is the least useful shape for something you work through over several months.
This page is a map instead. It answers the questions people ask first, then points you at the detailed guide for whichever stage you are actually at.
Who needs a US student visa?
If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident and you are going to the United States to study, you need a student visa. Which one depends on where you are studying. The US Department of State puts it plainly: your course of study and the type of school you plan to attend determine whether you need an F visa or an M visa.
For a master's, an MBA or any other academic degree at a university, that is the F-1. Vocational and technical programmes use the M visa. Almost everything on this page is about the F-1, because that is what a degree student needs.
What are the US student visa requirements?
The order matters more than the list. You cannot start the visa application until the school side is done.
Acceptance by a school approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. The school then issues your Form I-20.
Payment of the SEVIS I-901 fee, which comes after acceptance and before you apply for the visa.
The DS-160 online application, with a photo uploaded and the confirmation page printed to bring with you.
An interview at a US embassy or consulate, with documents that support what you say in it.
Evidence that you can pay for the course and your living costs for its duration.
The full list, in the order you will need each item, is in our F1 visa documents checklist.
How early can you apply, and how early can you travel?
These are two different dates, and confusing them is a common and expensive mistake. A student visa can be issued up to 365 days before your course start date, but you cannot enter the United States on it more than 30 days before that date.
So there is no advantage in delaying the application, and a real cost to it, because appointment availability is the part of the process you control least. Our F1 visa timeline works backwards from a start date so you can see when each step needs to happen.
Start here, depending on where you are
Five stages, five guides. Go to the one you are at rather than reading all of them.
Just starting. The whole F-1 process end to end: applying for an F-1 US student visa.
Gathering paperwork. What to bring and what each item is for: F1 visa documents checklist.
Filling in the DS-160. Step by step, with the mistakes that cause trouble later: DS-160 form for the F1 visa.
Preparing for the interview. What is actually being tested by each question: F1 visa interview questions and answers.
Working out dates. When to do each step, counting back from your start date: F1 visa timeline.
What happens if your visa is refused?
A refusal is a decision about one interview, not about whether you are qualified. Most student refusals are issued under section 214(b), which means the officer was not satisfied about your intent to study, your ability to fund the course, or your reasons to return home.
There is no appeal, but there is also no mandatory waiting period before you reapply. What matters is changing the thing that was unclear. Our guide to F1 visa rejection covers the most common reasons and what to fix first.
How do you show you can pay for it?
Funding is the requirement students underestimate most, and it is the one that comes up in almost every refusal. The officer is looking for a plan that holds for the whole programme and that matches your documents.
If a loan is part of that plan, a sanctioned amount in writing does considerably more for you than an intention. Prodigy Finance lends without collateral and without a co-signer, assessing your future earning potential instead, and funds go directly to your school. Confirming eligibility early means your DS-160, your I-20 and your financial documents can all say the same thing.*
You can check your eligibility in a few minutes and it does not affect your credit score.

The visa preparation tool walks through what you have and what is still missing, so you can see the gaps before an officer does.
