About the school

Founded in 1835 in New York City, the School of Law is the oldest law school in New York City. The school offers J.D., L.L.M, and J.S.D degrees in Law. The NYU School of Law alumni comprise Nobel Laureates, the International Court of Justice judges, and lawyers such as Amal Alamuddin Clooney, David Boies, Thomas Nagel, and Jeremy Waldron.

At the beginning of 1890, the NYU School of Law was the first school in the U.S. to admit women. The School of Law has also coordinated with the NYU Tandon School of Engineering to offer a Master of Science in Cybersecurity Risk and Strategy. In addition, the school has also entered into a partnership with the University of Melbourne Law School and the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law. It also offers a dual-degree programme with Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, where students can earn a JD/MPA or a JD/MPP.

Life at School of Law

New York City is a community of communities. NYU has much to offer its students a wide range of options, from residence halls to clubs and organisations. In addition to academics, the school encourages students to form bonds and networks with peers from around the world. Students have access to a variety of activities. They can go scuba diving in the Arabian Gulf, participate in an improv competition in the city, and much more.

Numerous student organisations at New York University - School of Law, including the vibrant Student Bar Association, offer opportunities for mentorship, networking, both on and off campus, and developing a sense of community. Other renowned student organisations include the Art Law Society, the Asia Law Society, the Black Allied Law Students Association, the African Law Association, the American Constitution Society, the Anti-Trafficking Advocacy Coalition, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Brazilian Legal Society, the NYU CannaLaw, the Canadian Law Organisation, the Coalition on Law and Representative, and the Environmental Law Society, among many others.

All organisations are accessible to everyone at NYU - School of Law, regardless of the student's background or identity (age, citizenship status, religion, sex, gender identity, etc.). The School of Law has a Student Health Centre (SHC) that offers students medical, health promotion, pharmacy, and counselling, as well as accessibility accommodation for disabled students.

The housing and residence halls are located in and around the vibrant surroundings of the Greenwich Village and Brooklyn Heights. The campus and residence area offer several learning opportunities for growth and pursuit of your areas of interest. Law students are accommodated at the D'Agostino Hall, right across from the law school, and Hayden Hall, which is only three blocks from class venues. Both the residence halls have a 24-hour front desk staff and services and, of course, maintenance staff. Also, the halls are equipped with room features such as high-speed Wi-Fi, cable television, and telephones with call-waiting and voicemail features. Other amenities include computer labs, laundry rooms, study rooms, bike storage, terraces and lounges, common recreation rooms, and more.

Admissions criteria

Admission to NYU - School of Law is highly competitive. Before proceeding with the application, it is mandatory to read the application instructions given on the official admission page of the NYU - School of Law. This is to ensure compliance with the admission procedure. The required material will be submitted via the Law School of Admission Council (LSAC), and the application must be submitted within a specific deadline.

Also, keeping a copy of the application is suggested, as the school won't return or provide copies for the same.

Generally, applications require the following types of information:

  • Complete personal information form
  • A personal statement written by the applicant (500-700 words)
  • A letter of recommendation from an employer, academic, etc.
  • The applicant's undergraduate transcripts, which must be translated into English
  • A graduate admissions test result (GMAT, GRE, LSAT)
  • Proof of proficiency in English (TOEFL - 100 out of 120, IELTS - 7.0 out of 9.0)
  • Resume/CV
  • Minimum Score/GPA of 3.93 (though not mandatory)
