Life at Maurer School of Law

Indiana University specializes in the visual arts, theatre, and opera, and it is home to the esteemed Jacobs School of Music. The campus also has an auditorium that hosts shows. Every year, roughly 300 film-related events are held at the IU Cinema.

The campus is surrounded by the natural beauty of Southern Indiana. Outside the campus, students have numerous opportunities to explore hiking, biking, fishing, and camping. Notably, each spring, the renowned Little 500 cycle race takes place. Overall, Bloomington offers affordable living for law students. Jerome Hall Library is one of the most beautiful libraries on the campus and is only accessible to Maurer Law School faculty, students, and staff. The library has computer facilities, conference rooms, and study rooms available throughout the building. The law school cost of living for 2023-2024 is around $53,855 for Indiana residents and $74,905 for non-Indiana residents. Living allowance, including food, transport, housing, and personal is a recommended $1,500.

The Law School encourages a goal of 60 hours of pro bono work during students' three-year legal studies, with an annual objective of 20 hours, in accordance with the ABA's term for unpaid legal services, devoid of monetary or scholastic compensation

Moreover, students have to attend compulsory ethics training before opting for pro bono. The college encourages students to participate in pro bono work, which is legal work provided for free to those who cannot afford to pay for it

Students who participate in pro bono work can earn academic credit and receive recognition from the law school

The students benefit from having the option of receiving a dual degree from one of 12 outstanding schools, or they may create a special programme according to their interests and objectives

The law school offers a variety of experiential education opportunities that allow students to gain hands-on experience in the legal field while helping local and global communities

Admissions criteria

Different qualifications are required for admission to the Maurer School of Law, depending on the programme you are applying for. A list of requirements that all applicants must meet is provided below:

Guidance for international applicants

A cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher An ACT or SAT score of the 85th percentile or above Students must be an undergraduate at Indiana University Bloomington Submission of a current resume A two to three-page personal statement Undergraduate transcripts Two letters of recommendation

In addition to the above list of documents, international students have to submit TOEFL and IELTS scores.

Job placements

Career Net: A comprehensive database of legal jobs, internships, and externships. Students can request a clerkship recommendation or find an externship placement through CareerNet

Judicial Clerkship: The Maurer School of Law has a strong tradition of placing students in judicial clerkships and legal research. Interested students or alumni can contact the career service office for a clerkship. Clerkships are highly competitive but can open doors to incredible opportunities after graduation. Law firms, government agencies, and NGOs value the experience and skills that judicial clerks have gained

Externships: A semester-long opportunity to work with a lawyer or judge. Externships are available at the Maurer School of Law in a number of practice areas, such as criminal law, civil litigation, environmental law, and public interest law

Fellowships: The Maurer School of Law offers a range of merit-based fellowships that may be of assistance to students or graduates who wish to pursue research-related careers
