About the school

Virginia Tech's College of Engineering has been churning out problem solvers and leaders for the last 150 years. The college prides itself on being the fifth-largest engineering graduate producer in the US. Additionally, it offers the most comprehensive and extensive engineering programme in Virginia. The College of Engineering has 384 tenure track and tenure faculty across 18 graduate and undergraduate studies areas. Virginia Tech has been at the forefront of life-changing research. These are in cyber-security, contamination, and Alzheimer's disease. Given the institution's impressive research activity, the National Science Foundation ranks the College 11th in R&D expenditure. Notable alumni from Virginia Tech include William C. Bixby (former editor, Look Magazine), Robert Castle Junior (flight director, NASA Johnson Space Center Mission Control), and Irving L. Peddrew III (the first African-American student to join Virginia Tech in 1953). Peddrew was also the first Black student in a historically White public school in the Confederacy. There is a residence hall named after Peddrew on the campus. Virginia Tech College of Engineering has its main campus in Blacksburg. Within is an airport, large tracts of land, and learner-friendly facilities. It also has branches in Greater Washington DC and Roanoke. Further, a branch in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, operates as the Steger Center for International Scholarship.

All students are encouraged to participate in the numerous organisations and clubs active on campus. These student-led platforms organise activities and events all year round. Virginia Tech offers on-campus housing for graduate students. This is available at the Donaldson Brown Graduate Life Centere. Amenities include common areas, a community kitchen, laundry, study lounges, and attached dining options. The university offers these based on entry date and availability. Those needing family housing can apply for off-campus accommodation. Please refer to the off-campus housing website portal for available listings. There are plenty of dining facilities within the residence halls. On-campus students must purchase a dining plan. Donaldson Brown is also near the Squires Students Centre and Owens, which has dining facilities. Eating at Au Bon Pain right at the residence is also available. International students residing at Donaldson Brown Graduate Life Centre have access to several fitness facilities. They include the VT Rec sports comprising gyms, group exercises, intramural sports, and more. Other outdoor activities can be experienced nearby at the War Memorial Hall and Drillfield. Conveyance services such as the Blacksburg Transit provide Virginia Tech students with public transportation. It has the distinction of being one of the best ten small transit systems in North America. Furthermore, the BT access is a paratransit door-to-door service that compliments fixed route bus services within the region. Conveyance options include cycling, mass transit, and rideshare. International students with personal cars must purchase the necessary parking permits.
