About the school

The University of York’s Department of Economics and Related Studies began operation in 1963. The department aims to make its students thoroughly adept in the economy and its advancements, thereby significantly impacting society.

Being one of the biggest educational departments in the UK focused on economics and related studies, the College trains its students to make considerable and progressive changes in the global economy’s critical facets. The fields include health economics, applied microeconomics, econometrics, macroeconomics and finance, economic theory, economic history, and political economy. The courses are diverse, from pure economics to combined courses that include finance, mathematics, history, philosophy, and politics.

The Times Higher Education ranking of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 places the Department in the top 10 for impact and joint 14 for research in the UK. Notable alumni include Anibal Cavaco Silva (former Portugal president), Han Seung-Soo (former South Korean prime minister, and Professor Daron Acemoglu (Erwin Plein Nemmers prize recipient).

The University of York offers on-campus accommodation options at Wentworth to graduate students. Those requiring this facility must apply as the houses fill up quickly. The university currently provides studio flats and self-catered single rooms for graduate students. Off-campus accommodations are also available at nearby locations. Students should get their University Card when they visit the campus for studies, regardless of whether they choose off-campus or on-campus accommodations. The University of York has over 200 student clubs, 65 sports and fitness clubs and other arts and entertainment activities to keep students engaged and entertained during their stay here.
