About the school
The College of Engineering and Mines, also known as CEM, has been open since 1922. It was initially set up as Alaska Agriculture College and School of Mines In 1917. The college is a part of the University of Alaska, which offers eight ABET-accredited project degrees. This shows that the college meets professional quality standards in natural and applied sciences, engineering, computing, and engineering technology. Research is a vital part of the College of Engineering and Mines. It also boasts a dedicated facility at the Institute of Northern Engineering. Within the college, students can find several research centres that provide the necessary support for many large-scale research and technology initiatives. The College of Engineering and Mines finds its home in Fairbanks, an interior city of Alaska. It's close to the Arctic Circle, exposing international students to a wide range of temperature variations. Beautiful lakes, forests, and mountains surround the campus.

At the School of Engineering & Mines at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, students experience a holistic educational journey that goes beyond academics. Housing options include traditional residence halls, duplexes, and apartments. The apartments are well-furnished and have all necessary utilities, including Wi-Fi, free on-site laundry, adjusted parking, and gender-inclusive housing options. There are two options for those aspiring to live on campus in the residence halls: Macintosh Hall and Bartlett Hall. The school strongly advises international students to secure housing before arriving in Fairbanks. Furthermore, they are encouraged to apply for on-campus housing, at least until they are familiar with the area.
Dining facilities are available on campus for residential and commercial students. These facilities can be availed using a credit card, Munch Money, BearBucks, or cash. Students can choose from various tiered meal plans and use the PolarExpress student ID card for meals.
With other prominent options, conveyance facilities also include bikes, which are quite popular in the city. Additionally, the Fairbanks North Star Borough offers public transportation in the commuter system. Extracurricular activities include over 100 active student-led clubs.

Admissions criteria
When applying at the School of Engineering & Mines, applicants have to submit supporting documents along with their online application. Generally, applications are required to meet the following criteria: - Certified university transcripts translated into English - Copy of passport identification page - PDF copy of UAF financial statements for international students - Official GMAT and GRE Scores - Resume including research experience, work, professional and civic memberships, foreign travel, and patents, - Statement of academic goals - Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional supervisors - IELTS, TOEFL, or completion of secondary education in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, or Canada, with the exception of Quebec Please consult the school’s website for information on fees, admissions, and financial aid.

CEM graduates are in high demand and often get jobs as contractors, designers, or in government offices. The college boasts a phenomenal placement rate for engineering students. Many mentorship opportunities are also available to guide students towards a bright future. Career fairs: The school participates in the Engineering Career Fair and the all-majors job and internship fairs, providing students with the opportunity to connect with potential employers and land their dream job or internship. One-on-one advising: Career Services offers personalised advising appointments, available both virtually and in person, to assist with a variety of career-related needs. Handshake platform: The Career Services department supports the use of Handshake, a career management platform that allows students and alumni to network with employers and explore careers.
