About the school

The College of Engineering and Mines, also known as CEM, has been open since 1922. It was initially set up as Alaska Agriculture College and School of Mines In 1917. The college is a part of the University of Alaska, which offers eight ABET-accredited project degrees. This shows that the college meets professional quality standards in natural and applied sciences, engineering, computing, and engineering technology. Research is a vital part of the College of Engineering and Mines. It also boasts a dedicated facility at the Institute of Northern Engineering. Within the college, students can find several research centres that provide the necessary support for many large-scale research and technology initiatives. The College of Engineering and Mines finds its home in Fairbanks, an interior city of Alaska. The school strongly advises international students to secure housing before arriving in Fairbanks. Furthermore, they are encouraged to apply for on-campus housing, at least until they are familiar with the area. Dining facilities are available on campus for residential and commercial students. These facilities can be availed using a credit card, Munch Money, BearBucks, or cash. Students can choose from various tiered meal plans and use the PolarExpress student ID card for meals.
With other prominent options, conveyance facilities also include bikes, which are quite popular in the city. Additionally, the Fairbanks North Star Borough offers public transportation in the commuter system. Extracurricular activities include over 100 active student-led clubs.
