About the school
The Department of Environmental Biology at SUNY may be small, but it offers its students all the opportunities and benefits that any premium university provides. The college was established in 1911 with the main aim of encouraging students to learn about the conservation of the environment and using renewable and sustainable resources. Today, it stands as one of the premier colleges in New York.
In the Department of Environmental Biology, students learn interesting environmental concepts like biodiversity, and ecological systems of plants, animals, and microorganisms to name a few. These are covered through carefully designed courses like aquatic and wetland sciences, fisheries and wildlife biology, forest health, biotechnology, and global ecology.

Life at the Department of Environmental Biology
At the ESF, students get to enjoy their lives while honing their academic and professional skills. While first-year students get to leverage on-campus accommodations, transfer students are usually set up in off-campus accommodation facilities. Currently, graduate students don’t have on-campus options. However, they can purchase meal plans at their convenience.
Students at ESF and the Department of Environmental Biology can purchase meal plans directly from Syracuse University. They can then use these vouchers at the Trailhead Café and Moon Café as well. Though graduate students may not find on-campus options for staying, they can find a lot of off-campus housing options near the college, including lease and co-renting facilities.
Students of EB at the institute get to enjoy many interesting traditions that have been followed at the ESF campus, ever since the inception of the college. These include the Spring Awards Banquet (March-April), December Soiree (semi-formal dance dinner event), Ice Cream Socials (free hand-dipped ice cream cone festival), Thank God It’s Friday Events, Class Gift Sessions, and much more.
Additional Benefits of Studying at the Department of Environmental Biology
ESF gives opportunities to its students across all disciplines to participate in about 40 ESF student organisations and about 300 organisations across the SU. These organisations not only nurture the professional and academic talents of the graduate students but also encourage the social and recreational aspects of their lives.
The Office of Student Success and Engagement conducts various activities to help students build their leadership skills and community. The Academic Success Center of ESF conducts many workshops throughout the student’s stay at the campus to improve their academic performance, reduce stress levels, help with time management, and provide other benefits.
