Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), Texas, was founded by the Fifteenth Legislature on 14 August 1876, as the "Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth". It was established to improve the conditions of emancipated slaves. The 2022–2023 edition of Best Colleges and National Universities by U.S. News & World Report ranked PVAMU at 331-440. Additionally, University Headquarters classified it as the best Historically Black College/University in Texas in 2022. The famous Prairie View A&M University - Roy G. Perry College of Engineering alumni include Roy G. Perry (the American comedian, television personality, actor, writer), and ex-electrical engineer Loni Love (who also performs stand-up comedy). Located in Prairie View, Texas, students can gain a first-hand experience of living in a historical city. A vibrant college town, Prairie View offers a suburban feel to its residents, while being just minutes away from Houston.

Life at Roy G. Perry College of Engineering
American Campus Communities (ACC) manages on-campus housing, accessible on a first-come, first-served basis, with a $650 deposit. Students can choose from University Village (1,2,3, and 6), University College, University View, University Square, and University View II locations for on-campus housing. Although PVAMU has no official affiliations with any off-campus locations, its campus shuttle service offers routes that give students access to Waller, Hempstead, and the City of Prairie View. The university offers several dining options to students, helping them manage educational experiences and allowing them to make close friends, meet new people, and connect with faculty and staff outside of the classroom. The university has many dining locations with diverse menus, operating times, and meal plans. Additionally, the food services provide vegan and vegetarian menus, as well as specific assistance with medically recommended diets. The Department of Recreational Sports at PVAMU is committed to promoting health and fitness and provides numerous options for adopting a healthy lifestyle. The amazing 10,000-square-foot fitness centre contains a variety of workout rooms.

Over 21 excellent research centres and labs, with 85 faculty members, research scientists, and postdocs, provide technical competence for businesses searching for joint research opportunities. According to Diverse Education in Higher Education, the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering holds a tie for first place nationally in generating African American males with bachelor's degrees in engineering. It also offers up to $10,000 in annual scholarships to help support students enrolled in the 5-year BS/MS programme or pursuing a master's degree in engineering or computer science.
