Admissions criteria

[Guidance for US Schools]

Admission requirements at the School of Law include the following:

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited Domestic Law School.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of academic excellence and promise.
  • Before the application review, applicants must submit the following documents:
    • Nonrefundable application fee in the form of a cashier’s check or money order listing “Howard University” as payee.
    • A completed application for admission to the Program.
    • A brief (2-3 pages), typed autobiographical statement describing professional goals and the role of the. degree in fulfilling those goals.
    • Official transcripts of records from both the university attended as an undergraduate and the institution attended for legal study.
    • An essay, written in English, describing the intended thesis topic.
    • Two letters of recommendation supporting character and academic potential in a graduate law program.

Additional admission requirements for international school includes the following:

  • A degree in law from an accredited law faculty of a foreign law school or an equivalent qualification to be determined by the School of Law’s Graduate Programs Committee.

    • One passport-size photograph
    • Proof of the ability to study in the U.S.
    • Statement of Financial Resources demonstrating the ability to pay for the program.
    • Requisite “F-1” student visa.
