The origins of the University of Delaware College of Engineering date back to 1837 when Newark College held its maiden "surveying and levelling" class. The engineering school quickly gained recognition for its strong commitment to research, education, and community engagement.
The University’s mechanical engineering department is among the first in the US to teach composite materials, prompting the establishment of the internationally recognised Center for Composite Materials.
Delaware University has 7 engineering departments—biomedical, chemical and biomolecular, and mechanical engineering being among them. The University ranks at 42nd spot among the best engineering schools. The US News & World Report 2022 ranks it at 25th spot among public universities nationally.
Notable alumni of the engineering school include Emily Christopher (project engineer, Gilbane Building Company), Michael J. Carragher (CEO of multidisciplinary civil engineering firm VHB), and Erin Rezich (aerospace engineer, NASA).
Newark is a small but beautiful city in Delaware with plenty of green spaces, including the famed Rittenhouse Park. Newark’s outskirts have miles of forest trails for students to test their fitness levels. The city also has lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and parks.
