About the school

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Western Michigan University provides its students with experiential learning opportunities and makes them career-ready. The construction of the high-tech academic facility for the College was completed in 2003. It covers a massive area of 343,000 square feet.

The programmes offered by the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET and the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. Several of the alumni of the College are well-known, and some of them include Deepak Ravindra (founder and CEO of Micro-Lam Inc.) and Robert Micahel Krueger (vice president-operations at Fessler and Bowman).

The College is situated in one of the most beautiful cities in the state of Michigan, Kalamazoo. It is known for its vibrant nightlife, festivals and eclectic eateries. Kalamazoo is a hub of industry and innovation. This generates hundreds of employment and internship opportunities for students every year.

Life at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Students of Western Michigan University (WMU) get ample opportunities to stay engaged, connected, fit and rejuvenated during their tenure here. With over 300 Student Organisations and more than 4,000 annual events at the Campus, WMU is buzzing with energy all throughout the year.

Physical and mental health is given a lot of importance at this University. Some of the sports activities that students can engage in when they become part of the sports clubs are badminton, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, dodgeball, golf, lacrosse, powerlifting, rugby, skating, track and field events, skiing/snowboarding, swimming, softball, tennis and more. The Student Recreation Center includes an aerobic room, courts, a climbing wall, a pool, a cycling studio, etc.

The University provides on-campus housing in 8 residence halls and 4 apartment buildings. All the residence halls feature double occupancy units. Apartments include Arcadia Flats, Spindler Hall, Stadium Drive Complex and Western View at four distinct locations on the Campus. Some students also opt for Learning Communities.

At WMU, students can easily find healthy and delicious meals at any time of the day. The Valley Dining Center, a popular dine-in location within the Campus, is open all 7 days of the week. Students can access the outlets here, with or without a meal plan from the University. Using meal plans and their Dining Dollar options, students can also enjoy a relaxing evening of coffee, snacks and some interesting dishes at one of the many cafes located on the Campus.

The Bronco Transit runs free shuttles on the Campus. The Kalamazoo Metro Public Transportation is also free for Western Michigan University students.

An interesting fact about the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is that it has paper, paper coating and paper printing pilot plants right inside the Campus. This gives students the best opportunity to understand in detail the processes of paper recycling, printing, making of paper and pulping. This kind of first-hand experience is very rare to get, and students get to make the maximum use of these resources.

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences have more than 75 laboratories. Some of the specialised engineering centres are the Computer Aid Engineering Center, Center for the Advancement of Printed Electronics, Center for Printing and Coating Research, Applied Aerodynamics Laboratory (with a highly advanced wind tunnel), Laboratories on microcomputers, digital logic and more and a highly-developed interdisciplinary design studio. These facilities offer training in cutting-edge technologies.

Admissions criteria

Admission requirements for specific programmes vary. The general admission criteria laid down by the Western Michigan University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences for international graduate applicants are the following:
