Life at School of Information

At the University of Texas at Austin - School of Information, students have a wide range of events and activities to get involved in campus life. They can go for a swim at the impressive Gregory Gym Aquatics Complex, explore an art exhibition at the Blanton Museum, participate in a guided tour of the LBJ Presidential Library, or catch a Longhorns game at the iconic Texas Memorial Stadium. There are over 1,000 student organisations, many of which are tailored for graduate students.

The university also offers accredited on-campus healthcare services, including the Counseling and Mental Health Centre, Longhorn Wellness Centre, Centre for Students in Recovery, and Recreational Sports Fitness/ Wellness Programmes.

Students can choose from various on-campus housing options, including 15 residence halls, university apartments, and Dobie Twenty21. Residence halls are fully furnished and have communal spaces for studying and lounging. The university apartments include family housing and 2 single student housing. Dobie Twenty21 is a 27-storey residential building with several amenities, including a rooftop terrace with a pool, basketball court, an outdoor theatre, 24-hour fitness centre, and more. The 2400 Nueces apartments located in the West Campus provide off-campus residences for students. These have facilities like a pool, 24-hour fitness centre, rooftop patio and courtyard, computer lab, study rooms, and more.

When it comes to dining, students have a plethora of choices, whether it's the dining halls like J2 or Kins Dining or the diverse range of popular restaurants and cafes scattered across the campus.

The Recreational Sports Department offers students various facilities like a recreational sports centre, gym, courts, intramural sports, sports clubs, a climbing wall, adventure trips, and many more.

Every student has the privilege of riding UT Shuttles, CapMetro, and E-Bus for free by using their UT ID. Alternatively, they can opt for bicycles as a means of commuting. Alternate cost-effective transit options include carpools, car share, vanpools, and UT Night Rides.

The school has several research labs that conduct interdisciplinary research and investigate a wide range of topics. Some of the labs include AI Lab, Artificial Intelligence and Human-Centered Computing Lab, Human-AI Interaction Lab, IX Lab, etc. All of these are open for students to conduct their studies.

The Information Commons provides students with resources and services needed for learning, research, and community-building activities. There are 2 sound rooms in the IT Lab where students can record and edit audio and videos.

Admissions criteria

International students applying to the graduate programmes at the University of Texas at Austin School of Information should adhere to the following general admission criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree comparable to US undergraduate degree

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0

  • Submit official transcripts from every college or university attended. If they are not issued in English, the official copies must be accompanied by their translations.

  • Provide the details of 3 referees

  • Most programmes require GRE or GMAT score

  • Proof of English proficiency is needed:

  • TOEFL: 79 (iBT), 213 (CBT), 550 (paper test)

  • IELTS: overall band score of 6.5
