About the school
The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) - College of Engineering and Information Technology is world-renowned for its exclusive and exceptional graduate programmes in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and cybersecurity. It has almost 600 graduate students, 33 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty, four full-time lecturers, and over 20 affiliate and part-time adjunct faculty. The College of Engineering and Information Technology, also popularly known as CSEE, maintains robust and active industry partnerships with global firms, regional and national companies, and many emerging technology companies in UMBC’s Research Park. The programmes provide a balanced practical and theoretical approach to studying software and hardware, including artificial intelligence, graphics and visualisation, computer networks and systems, database and knowledge management, algorithms and computation theory, and more. CSEE programmes are available to full-time and part-time students and include several accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s degree programme options. The curriculum stresses the development of problem-solving skills applied to the analysis and design of real-world problems and the fundamentals of mathematics and the physical sciences.

Life at College of Engineering and Information Technology
There is much for students to do at the College of Engineering and Information Technology. Students can join the Dissertation House programme, an intensive writing retreat designed to help graduate students overcome challenges they face in their dissertations. This institute offers a supportive and structured environment where students can work in groups, participate in workshops, and receive coaching from experienced facilitators. Other valuable resources for graduate students seeking to complete their degrees are computer science research centres and laboratories. These include the Cyber Defence Lab and Computing Compass Labs, where students can research topics on Novel Computer Architecture, cybersecurity education, and Hardware for Artificial Intelligence with other Emerging Technologies. The UMBC DAMS Research Group focuses on the main research areas on Data Management, AI, Privacy, and the Internet of Things. Students can also indulge in extra-curricular activities by joining the UMBC Game Developer’s Club, the Chess Club, and the UMBC Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Admissions criteria
Each graduate degree programme shares a similar structure and set of minimum requirements, leading to the M.S. (with or without a thesis) or Ph.D. degree. The department also has three graduate programmes with strong academic ties with other departments and programmes, including Information Systems, Biology, Geography, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Visual Arts, and the University of Maryland Medical School. You can apply online through UMBC’s Graduate School Website. Applicants must submit: - Bachelor's/undergraduate degree from an accredited university - Official transcript - 3.0 GPA - Three letters of recommendation - Statement of purpose - Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (GREs are not required for the MS Programme) - Proof of English proficiency (International students only): You must obtain the minimum score in the following exams to be eligible- TOEFL Paper-Based exam: 550, TOEFL Internet-Based exam: 80, IELTS: 6.5, and Duolingo: 115.
