About the school

The history of Louisville University’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering goes back to 1925 when Dr. William S. Speed and Mrs. Olive Speed Sackett set up an endowment to honour their late father, James Breckenridge Speed. J.B. Speed, the scion of an illustrious Kentucky family, played a crucial role in establishing the Louisville Street railway system. The endowment funds still supplement the school's activities. In 1936, four departments of the school received accreditation, making them a part of the Engineer's Council for Professional Development. Over 2,500 students are enrolled at the PhD, graduate, and undergraduate levels. Notable university alumni include Dr. Daniel Bachman (co-author of a patented heart ablation device) and Angela Akridge (first female chief engineer at Louisville MSD and recipient of the National Young Engineer of the Year award [2006]).
