About the school

University of Kentucky - College of Engineering was formed in 1918 by combining all the different engineering colleges under the University of Kentucky (UK). The US News and World Report has ranked the school at number 60 among the top public schools in 2023.

College of Engineering has produced many successful leaders. Rob Beeler (chief technology officer and co-founder of Trava Security), Vincent M. Holloway (vice president of Tetra Tech’s Federal IT Group), Uday Deshpande (chief technical officer of D&V Electronics), and Raj K. Krishnaswamy (director of the Innovation and Technology Center, Braskem America) are some of the notable alumni.

Life at the College of Engineering

The UK campus provides students with a profound research and learning environment. The College of Engineering’s 55 student organisations, student support services, campus events, and UK Athletics events help them get involved, acquire skills, form relationships, and gain experiences that positively impact their educational and career trajectories.

The University Graduate and Family Housing provides several on-campus living facilities for full-time single graduate and full-time non-traditional students. They include four different graduate communities offering several floor plans and university flats with modern, all-inclusive design. The University of Kentucky also provides resources to assist students in searching for off-campus accommodations.

The campus houses 20+ dining locations, including restaurants, dining halls, food courts, coffee shops, and convenience stores. These eateries provide fresh and delicious meal options.

UK Campus Recreation provides facilities like state-of-the-art fitness centres, Alumni Gym, aquatics, club sports, intramural sports, and outdoor adventure programmes.

The UK Transportation Services provides parking options, facilitates intra-campus mobility, and promotes commuting alternatives on the Campus. There are shuttle buses, ride-shares, bikes, and e-scooters available for the students. Additionally, riding on Lextran, the Lexington city bus, is free with a UK Student ID.

The Pathway of Innovation programme developed and executed by the College of Engineering Alumni Association (UKEAA), raises funds to support student activities and award Leadership Scholarships. UKEAA assists in attracting and retaining promising students with demonstrated leadership potential. The Innovation Centre and the Engineering Prototype and Invention Centre (EPIC) are maker spaces open to all engineering students where they can bring their designs to life. The Innovation Centre has sophisticated equipment like 13 3D printers, a laser cutter, a drill press, a band saw, and many other power tools. The EPIC houses the LPKF rapid PCB prototyping system and a circuit rework station. The James and Gay Hardymon Center for Student Success provides study spaces, engineering tutoring, and academic advising.

Admissions criteria

The admission criteria laid down by the University of Kentucky-College of Engineering for international applicants applying for the graduate programmes are as follows:

  • A personal statement or Statement of Purpose (SOP) is required

  • 3 letters of recommendation are to be submitted

  • Provide undergraduate transcripts translated into English

  • GRE or GMAT test score is required (minimum score varies by programme)

  • Proof of proficiency in English is mandatory:

  • Submit a resume or CV

  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and graduate GPA of 3.0 is required
