Life at the School of Public Health

Living in Brooklyn, New York, is a thrilling experience every day. Students can be involved with new communities whenever they are at Downstate and possibly benefit. The walkable distance from residence halls to academic buildings, libraries, and hospitals helps students save time and energy. The school ensures students' protection by placing 24-hour security personnel at the main entrance and adding key-card access as an additional security measure. Students can help enhance access to medical treatment by joining The Brooklyn Free Clinic (BFC), a healthcare clinic operated by students. Students looking to serve the homeless community can join The Street Medicine Outreach Association at Downstate. Other organisations include several diverse activities that allow students to do fun science experiments with Downstate students or conduct K-12 classrooms for them. Students can seek to follow their passions by joining one of the student organisations. Primary Care Interest Groups, Surgical Interest Groups, and Non-Surgical Interest Groups are some of the main categories of student organisations. Other groups fall into the following categories: Community Service Focus, National Organization Chapters, Cultural/Religious Organisations, General Interest Clubs, etc.

Additional benefits of studying at the School of Public Health

The college provides students with several facilities, including meeting rooms and lounges. Student organisations can reserve these spaces for meetings or presentations and enjoy meeting rooms with a number of LCD projectors. Students can use the recovery room, which contains multiple couches, high-top tables and stools, a desk area, and a TV. This space is exclusively reserved for students and is not allowed for events. Other rooms that students can use are the Conference Room (to accommodate 20 people), the Reading Room (30 people), and the Card Room (10 people) with a piano, chairs, and table. Students can use the main lounge, which is the largest of all spaces for conducting lectures, coffee houses, holiday parties, training sessions, etc. The room caters to various needs depending on the group size and activity. The room features a pull-down, large-screen TV and a portable LCD projector. The college also provides gym facilities, which are free for all SUNY Downstate students. These include a ballet bar, full-size basketball courts, locker room facilities, outdoor tennis courts, pool tables, sauna, squash courts, and table tennis. The weight and exercise Rroom comprises Bbarbells, bikes, body building Equipment, an elliptical, multi station, rowing machines, a speed bag, stair masters and treadmills.

Admissions criteria

The admission requirements at the School of Public Health are as follows: A bachelor's degree in any field of study from a university or college institutionally accredited Official transcripts from every previous postsecondary institution The college prefers undergraduate records with a cumulative score of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale Candidates who studied outside of the United States must submit a course-by-course evaluation of their academic credentials Candidates with a concentration in a specific discipline, such as Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, should have a Bachelor of Science with relevant courses Personal statement. Two letters of recommendation Licensed Health Professionals must submit proof of current licensure International applicants are required to submit English Proficient Test scores. TOEFL 79-95 Non-refundable application fee Financial aid is available through scholarships, part-time employment, grants, and loans Financial aid is not available for international students

Since they undergo many experiences in patient care, hospital administration etc., they get many job opportunities at many places. In the past, job titles included Health Educator, Epidemiologist, Public Health Lawyer, Policy Advisor, etc. Top employers include the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the U.S. Navy, Doctors Without Borders, Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, etc.
