Admissions criteria

Generally, you will need to provide the following information:

Graduate Application: Complete the online application for the desired full- or part-time graduate degree programme. Applicants may only apply to one degree programme per term.

  • Personal Statement: Provide a personal statement addressing your academic and research interests and future career goals relevant to the chosen graduate programme.

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae: Include details about your educational background, employment history, internships, and research experience.

  • Two Letters of Recommendation: Enter contact information for two recommenders on the online application. These should come from academic advisors, professors, or research mentors who can assess your potential for success at the graduate level.

  • Portfolio (if required): Some programmes like Architecture, Built Ecologies, and Electronic Arts may request a portfolio or project samples. Critical Game Design M.S./Ph.D. applicants should provide examples of prior work.

  • IT Background Evaluation Form (IT only): Applicants to IT programmes must complete this form.

  • Transcripts and Degrees: Ensure that transcripts and degrees from all post-secondary education are in English. Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded to the application. The minimum requirement is completing and awarding a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent.

  • GRE/GMAT Scores: GRE scores are required for Cognitive Science, Ph.D. All other degree programmes have optional GRE/GMAT submissions.

International Students:

  • English Language Proficiency: International applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE scores. Minimum scores are TOEFL iBT 88, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 120, and PTE 59. Some departments may have higher language proficiency requirements.

  • Green Card Holders: Those with a valid Green Card are considered domestic students for admission and financial aid purposes.

  • Waiver for English Language Proficiency: Applicants who have completed a U.S. university degree programme within two years of the application deadline may request a waiver for the English language proficiency test. The waiver will be considered after application submission and review by the Graduate Admissions Office.

  • Exemptions: Citizens of specific countries (Australia, Cameroon, Canada, except Quebec, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Lucia, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) are exempt from English language proficiency scores.
