Founded in 1870 as the Missouri School of Mines, the school initially focused on mining engineers and surveyors. However, after World War II, the university expanded, transforming into a world-class technological institute inside and outside the state. Before adopting its current name in 2008, the university was known as the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1964.
