About the school

Stanford University was established in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford as a memorial to their sole child, Leland Stanford Jr. The institute opened its doors on Stanford's prior Palo Alto estate in 1891. In 1948, the Schools of Biological Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences of Stanford University merged to form the School of Humanities and Sciences. At Stanford University, the heart of a top-notch liberal arts education is the School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S). H&S is comprised of 25 academic programmes and 23 departments, ranging from economics, mathematics, and biology to English, history, and art and art history.
