About the school

The College of Arts and Sciences is a flagship institute of the University of Tennessee (UT) - Knoxville. It is also the most comprehensive, largest, and most diverse of all the 11 colleges under the University. The College is central to UT’s academic achievements. Besides offering Arts and Science-based programmes, the College is home to the College Scholars Program and the Language and World Business Program. Every student attending the University receives core instructions from the College in visual arts, humanities, natural sciences, and performing arts. Some prominent College of Arts and Sciences alumni include Abigail Blount (US Army Captain, AH-64 Apache Helicopter pilot), Christopher Elkins (internationally recognised expert in antibiotic resistance and microbial pathogen detection), and Heath Shuler, senior advisor, Baker‐Hostetler law firm). Given its location in Knoxville, the College ensures international students join a welcoming community. The city offers a unique mix of outdoor adventure, natural beauty, and cultural attractions. Downtown Knoxville will expose you to an eclectic mix of modern and historic architecture. The College also organises many events and festivals throughout the year. International students will be happy to know that the cost of living in Knoxville is relatively low compared to other US cities.

Life at the College of Arts and Sciences

International students can sign up for various housing options through the University's housing portal. These comprise community-style halls, apartments, and suites. There is also the option of off-campus living at Lakemoor station. The off-campus rentals are close to the campus. The University does not guarantee search accommodation. The campus offers many dining locations with convenience, affordability, and flexibility. International students can sign up for meal plans and use them in the relevant areas. Also, retail locations such as Subway, Einstein Bros, and Quiznos are available on campus. You are at liberty to explore the vibrant Knoxville area and find delicious foods from all over the world. Conveyance facilities include the T-Transit System bus service that caters to students with disabilities and those who travel late at night. A shuttle service is also available for those in satellite locations. Knoxville Area Transit buses and trolley systems transport those travelling outside campus. Commuting students can find parking facilities on campus for which a permit is needed. MyRecSports is the place to sign up for fitness activities. These include group fitness classes and outdoor pursuits. Students can also take courses in swimming or lifeguard certification. The University of Tennessee encourages student involvement in community affairs. Several organisations are actively involved, including the Graduate Student Senate, OUTGrads, and the Multicultural Graduate Student Organisation.

As per 2021-2022 statistics: There are around 177 Master's of Arts and Sciences graduates, the employment rate for students is around 56%, and the median salary is roughly $48,200. The Centre for Career Development and Academic Exploration provides crucial guidance to students. It prepares them for the job market with services such as resume writing, career readiness competencies, and interviews. Graduates have a dedicated resource under the College and Industry-Specific Coaching. The department also actively reaches out to employers to provide students with opportunities. They can post jobs or take advantage of the numerous employer resources. Further, it arranges career fairs that provide networking opportunities between potential employers and students.
