Hiring Trends in Start-ups: Prodigy Finance Start-Up Your Summer Event Series part 1

Prodigy Finance - October 20, 2016

This summer, we opened our office doors in the United States—in New York’s Flatiron district. We celebrated this milestone with our inaugural “Start-Up Your Summer” event series. These fireside chats focused on the themes of disruption and social impact, and included our current students, alumni, like-minded companies and diverse talent.

Danish Munir, Co-Founder and CTO of 1 Doc Way, and Richard Hughes, Recruitment Lead at Managed By Q, joined Joel Frisch, Head of our US office to discuss start-up hiring trends.

Frisch framed the intimate process of culture fit in this sector, “a house is not a home unless you have a family”. While enchanting in some ways, this idea of “fit” is the same reason it can be difficult to approach the job hunt for non-traditional companies.

Traditional career and university coaching all too often leads to limited paths – especially for MBA candidates (consulting, consumer goods and investment banking to name a few). While some aspects are relevant across all sectors, such as following up and being bold, there are plenty of stories of how Silicon Valley and its friends are shaking up hiring at cutting edge companies.

Munir shared his experiences with both seeking as well as hiring, ultimately it has to work both ways for a start-up to hire and then preserve that magic. "Start with knowing what you want in a company, go out there and talk to people. The process of discovery is important.”

Frisch echoed the sentiment and added that the successful candidates understand the long term vision of the company and equally think about their own long term journey.

Drawing on years of experience hiring for agencies as well as for start-ups, Hughes cautioned against just “start-up shopping”. Be prepared to work for a trending sector, but also prove you want to engage in the company. “At a start-up wearing many hats is a cliché, sometimes it’s ok to wear one hat and do it really well.”

Ultimately the advice to all business students is to sell yourself, passion and sincere interest; not just rest on your credentials or MBA.

Look out for part 2 of the Start-Up Your Summer series, which was held in both NYC and San Francisco.
